The call for applications "Linguistics" within Erasmus + KA1 is now open

The call is now open for the course “Linguistics” for international students.  The course runs from February  2019 to June 2019.

Deadline for applications is November 1, 2018

The Erasmus+ Programme is a European funding programme offering university students a possibility of studying or doing an internship abroad in another country for a period of at least 2 months and maximum 12 months per cycle of studies. Erasmus+ now offers the possibility to go way beyond the European borders as well.

Erasmus + Key Action 1: Mobility of Individuals supports mobility in the education, training and youth sectors and aims to bring long lasting benefits to the participants and the organizations involved. Under Key Action 1 students get scholarships covering all costs associated with the stay and study at a foreign university (travel costs, accommodation costs, visa, etc). NVSU and UdB have received grants in this key area, enabling NVSU and UdB students and teachers to join training and internships within inter-institutional agreement (Key Action 1: Mobility for learners and staff, Higher Education Student and Staff Mobility). The course “Linguistics” gives an introduction into the study of languages, the field of linguistics. With the support of the basic linguistic terminology that is offered in the course, you will soon be able to comment differences between languages. Anyone who wishes to understand how languages work, and how they can give us insight into the human mind is very welcome to join.

The course is divided into various modules (each module is 5 ECTS):

  1. Russian as a Foreign Language (obligatory).The module is aimed at providing basic information about the structure of the Russian language, teaching students to freely use language tools in everyday and professional communication and be able to select the speech material in accordance with the style and genre, to master writing and speaking rules and the means of expressing ones’ opinion; developing language skills.
  2. Analytical reading. The main objective is to develop the ability to identify and analyze the linguistic and pragmatic features of the text, its expressive and evaluative components, to combine linguistic and literary elements of the analysis necessary to understand the artistic ideas of an author and interpret a literary text. The objectives of the module also include improving student vocabulary and language skills and extending the knowledge of cultural and historical realities of the target language
  3. History and Culture of the Spanish Language The module is aimed at studying the history and culture of Spain to ensure a more comprehensive understanding of national realities, national and cultural mentality as reflected in the language based on the history of the country, social and political features of Spanish life; developing and expanding general outlook and vocabulary of students.
  4. Oral and Written Communication (English Language) The main objective is to develop the idea of the English language as a systematic and structural phenomenon with specific features of its modern functioning in terms of modern cognitive-discursive approach to language. This module is designed to help organize specific and general linguistic knowledge. The module includes Lexis, Grammar and Stylistics.
  5. Text Linguistics. The module is aimed at developing the ability to identify and analyze the linguistic and pragmatic features of texts, their expressive and evaluative components, to combine linguistic and literary elements of the analysis necessary to understand the artistic ideas of an author and interpret a literary text. The objectives of the module also include improving student vocabulary and language skills and extending the knowledge of cultural and historical realities of the target language.
  6. Idiomology of Modern English Languages. The main objective is developing the awareness of linguistic features of modern British and American English phraseological systems, the role and place of phraseological elements in different modern English discourses and major trends of their development. The objectives of the module, along with the improvement of theoretical and practical knowledge of English idioms, also include developing and expanding the overall linguistic outlook, as well as improving social and cultural competences. This module is designed to help the student organize their knowledge of English lexis and the features of its functioning in different speech styles.
  7. Russia and Western Countries: Cultural Contacts. The main objective is familiarizing the students with fundamental periods, trends and events in the module of cultural cooperation between Russia and Great Britain; developing the perception of cultural contacts between these two countries as a reflection of the historical and contemporary reality; developing the awareness of historical phenomena and mechanisms of international contacts.
  8. Modern Great Britain. The course enables participants to increase their awareness of aspects of modern British life and culture and to build confidence in their own English language and develop their language awareness. The course includes content drawn from a wide range of topics on contemporary British Culture. These topics, such as the arts and the media, will enable participants to gain a better understanding of aspects of modern British life and culture.
  9. Theoretical Grammar of the English Language. The course aims to describe the grammatical structure of the English language as a system where all parts are interconnected. The difference between theoretical and practical grammar lies in the fact that practical grammar prescribes certain rules of usage and teaches to speak (or write) correctly whereas theoretical grammar presents facts of language, while analyzing them, and gives no prescriptions.
  10. Stylistics of the English Language. The course focuses on different linguistic levels (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, discourse and conversation analysis) and explains how language creates meanings and the style of each text. It also examines the impact of texts on their readers and the ways in which readers arrive at certain interpretations.
  11. English Language Practice and Culture. The course is aimed at teaching the culture of oral and written communication on the basis of the development of general, linguistic, pragmatic and intercultural competencies, which, in cooperation with other courses, promote the formation of students’ professional skills.
