History

The history of Nizhnevartovsk State University dates back to 1988 when a branch of Tobolsk State Pedagogical Institute named after Dmitriy Mendeleyev was reorganized into Nizhnevartovsk State Pedagogical Institute. At that time it was one of the first institutions to offer higher education to students in the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area.

The then Nizhnevartovsk branch of Tobolsk State Pedagogical Institute started with just 3 faculties, 25 teachers and with only 150 students in attendance. Yet it was from these humble beginnings that higher education in Yugra would soon grow and flourish.

In 2005, Nizhnevartovsk State Pedagogical Institute was awarded university status as per order of the Federal Education Agency of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation.

Anatoly Karpov, Candidate of Philology, Assistant Professor, became the first rector of the Institute. His skillful leadership was crucial to the rapid development of the Institute and led to opening of new faculties, departments, a publishing house, postgraduate education courses, better material and technical resources.

In 2007, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor Sergey Gorlov took up the position of the rector of the University, leaving Anatoly Karpov the first President of the University. Sergey Gorlov set a course for three priority lines of NVSU development: to certify the University’s Quality Management System, to start new degree programs in economics and management, engineering and technology, to undergo a state examination and obtain a status of a classical university.

Some of these objectives have been successfully achieved. Academic programs in NVSU are among the top innovative programs in Russia. Nizhnevartovsk University became a laureate of the Regional competition “Best Ural Higher Education Institutions - 2010”, held in the framework of the National contest “Best Russian Universities”.

In 2013, the university became Nizhnevartovsk State University (NVSU), altering its name to reflect the broader choice of disciplines offered in addition to the humanities.

Today Nizhnevartovsk State University is an advanced and rapidly developing Institution of Higher Vocational Education. It’s a leading Institution of Higher Education for the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area. Its departments cover a number of educational trends including high quality staff training in the fields of science, education, economics and culture. It offers training in many branches of modern science and humanities.

Nizhnevartovsk State University comprises 9 faculties, 23 departments, 6 research laboratories, an open air museum, comprehensive library facilities, University Publishing House, Sports and Recreation Centre.
