Final Research and Practical Conference “Intercultural Dialogue and Collaboration of the EU and Russia: Implementation of Jean Monnet Projects at NVSU”

On April 15-19, NVSU held the Final Research and Practical Conference “Intercultural Dialogue and Collaboration of the European Union and Russia: Implementation of Jean Monnet Projects at Nizhnevartovsk State University”.

Held with the view to summarize and transmit the results of Jean Monnet projects implemented at Nizhnevartovsk State University, the conference was aimed at boosting up knowledge about the European integration and the issues of the EU environment, history, economics and legislation.

The conference objectives included bringing the European dimension to the educational process of NVSU, sharing experiences on teaching and research related to the European Union, stimulating the students and teaching staff to participate in European scientific and technological cooperation programs, raising awareness of the Erasmus+ and Jean Monnet programs, reinforcing the dialogue between the academic environment and the professional community, consolidating the efforts of professional communities in the effective implementation of the best EU practices, stimulating teaching, research and discussion activities on EU related issues, increasing the student and staff mobility study the EU experience, and increasing the level of academic knowledge on the European integration.

The event was dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the Jean Monnet program. In 1989, the Jean Monnet program was launched to support academic research on European integration in its Member States. Thirty years on, the program continues to fund teaching and research on EU policies and fosters dialogue between academics, decision makers and civil society actors around the world. In 2019, Jean Monnet program marks 30 years. To celebrate this anniversary, a series of decentralized events are held in EU Member States and beyond, initiated and organized by academics and universities who have participated in the program. Nizhnevartovsk State University joined the celebration with the Final Research and Practical Conference “Intercultural Dialogue and Collaboration of the European Union and Russia: Implementation of Jean Monnet Projects at Nizhnevartovsk State University”.

On April 15, the conference was opened with the welcoming words of Anatoly Karpov, NVSU President, Natalia Vatolkina, Erasmus+ expert, Associate Professor of the Department of Management at Moscow at Bauman Moscow State Technical University, Matti Hirsilä, Head of the Department of Global Competence School of Business at JAMK University of Applied Sciences (Jyväskylä, Finland), Francesc Murria, Adjunct Professor at the Department of Evolutionary Biology, Ecology and Environmental Sciences, University of Barcelona, Simon Bødker Andersen, Lecturer at the Department for Social Education, University College South Denmark, and Denis Pogonyshev, First Vice-Rector, Vice-Rector for Research at Nizhnevartovsk State University.

The conference was attended by NVSU teachers and students, as well as representatives of the academic, political, public and professional communities. The honorary guests of the conference included staff members of the European universities and organizations that acted as chairmen and panel session experts: Marc Ruiz-Zorrilla, Professor of the University of Barcelona (Spain), Trine Etzerodt, Head of Department for Social Education at the University College South Denmark (Aubenro, Denmark), Atena Groza, Advisor to the National Agency for Protected Areas, Leading Expert in Biodiversity, DAKIA Association for Sustainable Development (Romania), Matti Hirsilä, Head of the Department of Global Competence School of Business at JAMK University of Applied Sciences (Jyväskylä, Finland), Francesc Murria, Adjunct Professor at the Department of Evolutionary Biology, Ecology and Environmental Sciences, University of Barcelona, Simon Bødker Andersen, Lecturer at the Department for Social Education, University College South Denmark.

Gregoire Debois, Project Leader in biodiversity conservation, and Ole Osterman, Policy Coordinator, both members of the Joint Research Center for the Science and Knowledge Services of the European Commission, joined the conference on-line.

The first day of the conference included reports and presentations by the Jean Monnet project coordinators, who spoke on the results of five Jean Monnet projects implemented at Nizhnevartovsk State University:

The conference included a plenary meeting, several panel sessions discussing the results of five Jean Monnet projects, round table discussing on topical issues of EU related studies introduced into the educational process, the Student Forum "Erasmus Generation at NVSU", educational webinars and other events.

On April 16, the Panel Session “Strategies of Biodiversity Conservation in the European Union and Russia: Best Practices and Cooperation Prospects” was opened. Devoted to the results of the Jean Monnet Project “Promoting biodiversity conservation in RF via advanced EU practices”, the Session became a platform for analyzing and discussing the EU best practices on biodiversity conservation and their applicability in areas affected by oil and gas production and areas under growing anthropogenic load (in Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area - Yugra) and overall possibility of applying the EU practices in Russia.

The conference was continued by Panel Session 2 “Interaction of environment and human health: Experience of the European Union”, discussing the results of the Jean Monnet Module “Interaction of environment and human health: Experience of the European Union”, as well as key issues of environmental impact on human health and possibilities of using the EU experience in the field of environmental protection and human health in Russia.

On April 17, two panel sessions were held to summarize the Jean Monnet modules implemented at the Department for Commerce and Management. The issues under discussion during Panel Session 3 “The European Union Practices of Standardization in Quality Management Systems” included raising awareness of standardization importance for the Russian, European and global economies; studying the EU experience in developing an internal market based on the modernization of national standards; developing the quality management system based on harmonized standards. The conference fruitful scientific discussion helped promoting the EU experience of standardization, bringing the research results and recommendations concerning product quality management system to the widest possible audience and popularizing scientific knowledge. The Session was chaired by Natalia Vatolkina, Erasmus+ expert, Associate Professor of the Department of Management at Moscow at Bauman Moscow State Technical University.

Aimed at discussing eco-oriented business within the concept of sustainable development, the Panel Session 4 “New Challenges of Green Economy: Practices of the European Union and Russia” (Jean Monnet Module “Developing Green Skills for Entrepreneurship and Business Based on the EU Experience”) included such issues as environmental education and awareness within sustainable development of society; environmental entrepreneurship; European experience and approaches in developing green skills in business; ecological marketing as a modern concept and potential for business development; and Russian green business practices. Chaired by Matti Hirsilä, Head of the Department of Global Competence School of Business at JAMK University of Applied Sciences (Jyväskylä, Finland), and guest speaker, Natalia Gorbacheva, Senior Researcher, Institute of Economics and Industrial Engineering, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Novosibirsk), the Session attracted talented managers, researchers, teachers, students, and entrepreneurs into the process of solving urgent problems of eco-friendly business and international cooperation.

On April 18, NVSU held the Panel Session 5 “Social Europe and the European Union Social Policy”. The Session was focused on the results of Jean Monnet Module “The European Union Social Policy”. The participants discussed the key issues of the EU social policy organization and possibilities for applying the EU practices of social security, social insurance and social protection in Russia. The Session Chairman Mark Ruiz-Zorrilla (Spain), Professor of the Department of Slavic Studies at the University of Barcelona, made a report on “Social Policy of Catalonia in the field of education”. The report by Trine Etzerodt, Head of the Social Education Program at the University College of South Denmark (Denmark), was devoted to social work in Denmark and training of specialists in social education at the University College of South Denmark

The conference was concluded with an external monitoring of projects made by Paivi Korhonen, CEO of PDGE (Project Development Group Europe), who interviewed the project coordinators and analyzed the qualitative and quantitative results.
