2nd year students from the Faculty of Culture and Consumer Services returned from Finland

Diana Starikova and Anastasia Vishnyakova, 2nd year students from the Faculty of Culture and Consumer Services, have shared their impressions after returning from Finland where they spent one semester taking part in an exchange study program of JAMK University of Applied Sciences (Jyvaskyla), one of the biggest and most popular multidisciplinary universities in Finland.

During their stay the students managed to practice English, improve their skills and knowledge in the field of study, make a lot of international friends, as well as to travel and visit Helsinki during the winter vacation.

It was noted that the teaching system in Finland is a lot different from the Russian one. In Russia much attention is paid to individual work of students, whereas in Finland 90% of classes are held in group, which at first was unusual for the Russian students. Besides, there were no lectures at the university, only practical work. The environment in the class was friendly, easy-going and light. The tasks given by teachers were very interesting, and students could do them both in class and at home. Also, the teachers were always glad to answer questions and hear feedback from students.

The girls took an active part in the rich student life of JAMK. Each week there was a variety of activities: movie nights in cafeteria, sports days, student parties on campus, such as Chinese New Year or Valentine's Day party, and many more.

The students say they experienced some language barrier at the beginning. However, some time after their arrival they were able to improve their language skills and socialize more freely. If they had any questions, they could always talk to tutors, other students or locals who were always happy to help. Also, the students received a lot of support from the international department of the university.

The city where the girls stayed is an attractive place, especially for students. Jyvaskyla is a charming and lively, young and innovative, safe and stable place, with a unique northern landscape. Local people are very friendly and always welcome new guests.
