NVSU has held a research and methodical seminar on “Environment, Health and Climate change: Facing the challenges and Adapting to Impacts: Experience of the European Union”

On November 25, NVSU held a scientific and methodological seminar on Environment, Health and Climate Change: the European Union's Experience at the Faculty of Ecology and Engineering.

The seminar participants discussed the possibilities for using the EU experience in environmental protection and human health in the context of climate change. The seminar included reports made by university professors, graduate students of NVSU Faculty of Ecology and Engineering and working-life in the field of ecology and environmental management of Nizhnevartovsk. Vera Kuznetsova, a senior lecturer at the Department for Geography, reported on the impact of weather and climate risks in the EU countries and Russia. Irina Pogonysheva, Assistant Professor at the Department for Ecology, spoke on climate change and the risk of rare animals and plants extinction. Sergey Korkin, Head of the Laboratory for Geoecological Research, and Elena Korkina, Head of the Department for Geography, spoke on the aspects of studying the climatic conditions of the past. Inna Lunyak, an expert from the Office of Environmental Management and Ecology of Nizhnevartovsk City Administration, reported on the impact of climate on human health and the EU studies in the field. Ivan Didenko, Head of the Ecology Department of OOO NITs SibGeoProekt discussed climate change issues and transformation of ecosystems in the northern territories. Olga Skorobogatova, Associate Professor of the Department for Ecology, and Maria Semochkina, a graduate student of the Department for Ecology, talked about algo-indicative signs of warming detected in Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area-Yugra. Tatyana Storchak, Head of the Department for Ecology, explored climate change and biodiversity loss: the European approaches to assessment.

After the reports and discussion, the seminar continued with awarding the winners of competition on “Climate Change Indicators” held among students mastering the course of Environment, Health and Climate Change: European Union Experience.

The winners included 4th year students majoring in Ecology and Environmental Management:

Anna Moskaleva and Vera Protasova: report on Greenhouse Gases and Climate Change; Yaroslava Samokhina and Anna Ulyanova: reports on Climatic Phenomena of La Niña and El Niño, their Impact on the Global Climate.

The seminar was held within Jean Monnet Module project titled “Environment, Health and Climate change: Facing the challenges and Adapting to Impacts: Experience of the European Union” (600178-EPP-1-2018-1-EN-EPPJMO-MODULE/CLIMEU). The project is being implemented at the Department for Ecology, financed by the European Commission and coordinated by Irina Pogonysheva, Associate Professor, Candidate of Biological Sciences, Denis Pogonyshev, First Vice-Rector of NVSU, Candidate of Biological Sciences, and Vera Kuznetsova, Senior Lecturer, Candidate of Geographical Sciences. At the end of the seminar, the participants adopted a resolution.
