NVSU held International training seminar “Business Academy”

From 13 to 17 November 2017 Nizhnevartovsk State University held International training seminar on entrepreneurial skills development “Business Academy”. Over the course of the week students of the 3rd and 4th year from different fields of studies participated in a very intensive course that aims to develop entrepreneurial potential in students and give them an opportunity to acquire practical skills of development and implementation of new projects and develop strategic approach to decision making. About 90 students of NVSU participated in the training seminar together with professors from the Faculty of Economics and Management.


            The training seminar was funded by Program for Development of Student Unions (The Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation) and programs implemented within Erasmus+ :

  • Jean Monnet  Module “Developing Green Skills for Entrepreneurship and Business Based on the EU Experience”,
  • UNISON “University-enterprise cooperation via spin-off companies network “. 

The seminar was moderated by JAMK University of Applied Sciences (Jyväskylä, Finland) representatives: Matti Hirsilä (MSc, Economics; PhD candidate JYU) Head of the program “International Business”; Juha Saukkonen (M. Sc., econ, senior lecturer) academic coordinator of the program “International Business”, manager of Technology Business –specialization track. Certified Supercoach Entrepreneurial Training ® (SET) Launchpad programme coach.


            The opening ceremony of the seminar featured speeches from prominent people of NVSU. Anatoly Karpov, the President of Nizhnevartovsk State University, opened the ceremony with his welcome word, where he noted that modern higher education is a complex process compiled of diverse skills knowledge. Students leaving the university need to possess knowledge in various spheres and one of the criteria of successful students is ability to develop entrepreneurial potential. 


            The seminar was supported by big international projects that are being currently implemented at NVSU with the support from European program Erasmus+. The overview of these projects was presented during the opening ceremony as well:

Denis Pogonyshev, Vice-Rector for Licensing and Accreditation gave a presentation on the project UNISON University-enterprise cooperation via spin-off companies network”, that was approved for funding in 2016 as a result of application call within Key Action 2 activities: Cooperation for Innovation and Exchange of Good Practices/ Capacity Building in the field of Higher Education.


Oksana Kozlova, professor of the Department for Commerce and Management delivered a presentation on Jean Monnet Module “Developing Green Skills for Entrepreneurship and Business Based on the EU Experience”. This project will not only form ecological competencies of future entrepreneurs, but will also contribute to the implementation of the regional project “Lean Region”.


            The week of seminars and group work focused around 7 main themes: “Strategic planning”, “Intellectual property, Technology and Products”, “Marketing and Sales”, “Competitions, partners, networks”, “Operations, management and staffing”, “Financial planning” and “Presentation skills”. Students worked in teams throughout the whole seminar, so they were able to improve their team-working skills and entrepreneurial thinking. The coaches particularly focused on presenting skills, especially on the art of 30 second personal elevator pitches and 15 minute project presentations.


            The second day, 14th of November, featured a panel session “I’m an entrepreneur”. Representatives of Nizhnevartovsk businesses took part in a discussion. They shared stories of their businesses and experience of managing a business in regional conditions. The session was moderated by Anna Chernukhina, Director of Nizhnevartovsk branch of Yugra entrepreneurship support fund and Natalya Shulga, leading business coach of Yugra entrepreneurship support fund and CEO of “Business Plan” LLC.


            The seminar concluded with team presentations of business ideas “Business Breakthrough”. 8 teams presented their business projects that they have been developing during the week under supervision of Finnish experts. The jury selected best ideas and projects in three nominations:

«Best Business Idea»: innovative ideas that can be used to build a new company or develop a new direction in exciting company;

 «Best Business Project»: structured business plan with expected outcomes;

«Best Initiative for NVSU»: entrepreneurial projects that would help NVSU to reach its goals.


            Coaches from JAMK University of Applied Sciences (Jyväskylä, Finland) established a nomination “Potential for International Cooperation”. Nizhnevartovsk branch of Yugra entrepreneurship support fund also gave a special prize to one of the teams. The winners were awarded prizes and diplomas.


         International training seminar on entrepreneurial skills development “Business Academy” allowed the participants learn more about leading Russian and Finnish business practices, acquire entrepreneurial skills and knowledge. Moreover, the seminar created entrepreneurial environment where students could nurture their own business ideas. In the long-term perspective it will aid development of small businesses and self-employment, creation of new jobs and increase employability of graduates.
