The Department was established in September 1995. The teaching staff includes highly qualified professionals, doctors and candidates of sciences, professors and associate professors.

The Department sees its mission in training qualified, competitive specialists which will be in high demand among local and national business community. Therefore, the Department’s priority is to provide high quality educational services in the field of foreign languages and intercultural communication. We are striving to integrate our mission with the mission stipulated in various documents of the EU, the Council of Europe, and UNESCO, which proclaim the multilingualism principle as a fundamental principle of national education systems. We strongly believe that by applying this principle we promote a tolerant attitude to different languages and cultures, and support peace in countries and regions around the world.

The Department works in close cooperation with various Russian and foreign universities, including:

-         M. Akmullah Bashkir State Pedagogical University

-         Chelyabinsk State University

-         Irkutsk State Linguistic University

-         Pyatigorsk State Linguistic University

-         Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey, California, USA

-         Department for Continuing Education, Oxford, UK

Our lecturers maintain contacts with Cambridge Education Training (CET), British school of English in Nizhnevartovsk, the English Language Office coordinated by the Office of English Language Programs Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the US Embassy in Moscow, and with the British Council, which creates opportunities for foreign language speakers to take part in training our students. In addition, for some years we have held international research and practical workshop on Innovative Technologies in Teaching Foreign Languages involving American teachers of English as a foreign language.

The Department of Linguistics and Translation Studies cooperates with local educational institutions, holds joint methodical workshops and provides assistance and methodological support for foreign language teachers of local schools and colleges. Several department members act as experts atthe Unified State Examination in foreign languages and are certified PCE, CAE examiners (University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate).

The department members are regular awardees of local, national, and international grants and scholarships, including Fulbright grants, Eranet Plus grants, scholarships of the University of Barcelona etc.

Our academic members are studying topical issues of theoretical and applied linguistics, take regular part in research conferences and competitions, publish their research in national and international scientific journals and assist student research work.
