COURSE TITLE: LINGUISTICS
COURSE DATES: SPRING 2016 (18th January - 27th May )
ELIGIBILITY: Bachelor Students, who have completed 1st year of study
AIMS: empower student skills in the related field of knowledge, introduction to new approaches and perspectives.
ASSESSMENT AND ATTENDANCE: 80% of attendance for each module
PRACTICAL TRAINING: Students undergo training at general education schools.
ECTS: the course is of 30 ECTS.
LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION: English.
ACCOMMODATION: NVSU Student residence hall.
ON SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION: students receive a certificate of participation indicating completed modules and number of ECTS.

RUSSIAN AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE
Objectives:providing basic information about the structure of the Russian language, teaching students to freely use language tools in everyday and professional communication and be able to select the speech material in accordance with the style and genre, to master writing and speaking rules and the means of expressing ones’ opinion; developing language skills.
FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING METHODS AND EDUCATION
The module focuses on the most used and recognized approaches and methods of teaching foreign languages in the general education schools. Objectives:developing a sustained interest in the chosen pedagogic profession and preparing the students for independent creative activity as teachers of foreign language. The objectives of the module include familiarizing the students with the basic modern principles of teaching foreign languages and various approaches and methods of training (adopted in national and foreign practice) in the context of developing foreign language communicative competence of school students. The module provides a detailed study of the issues associated with the formation of linguistic and socio-cultural competences of students at different stages of learning foreign languages and helps mastering the essential skills required of a teacher of foreign languages.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE ORAL & WRITTEN COMMUNICATION
The module aims to develop students communicative competence and enhance skills in understanding and producing correct English structures through oral and written communication.
Objectives:expanding students’ knowledge of the current situation in the world and in the countries of the target language and their political, social, cultural and economic life. The module is designed to familiarize the students with the features of mass media style, develop their reading and comprehension skills and ability to understand periodicals as a valuable source of information about the current state of the studied language and modern life in the world and in the country of the target language. The module focuses on improving linguistic competences and language skills, including reading, comprehension, listening skills, vocabulary and grammar; developing discussion, annotation and summary skills.
Objectives:developing the ability to identify and analyze the linguistic and pragmatic features of the text, its expressive and evaluative components, to combine linguistic and literary elements of the analysis necessary to understand the artistic ideas of an author and interpret a literary text. The objectives of the module also include improving student vocabulary and language skills and extending the knowledge of cultural and historical realities of the target language. The books for reading written by contemporary British authors are provided by the charitable foundation “Oxford-Russia”.
QUANTITATIVE LINGUISTICS (CORPORA LINGUISTICS)
The module aims to improve students' skills in using computers, IT and the Internet in foreign language teaching and for professional purposes. Besides, students become familiar with the major theoretical frameworks in corpus linguistics.
